If you're a parent, your schedule probably looks something like this: work, school drop-offs, practices, games, grocery runs, dinners, laundry; list goes on and on. Somewhere along the way, you probably had every intention of working out, going for a walk, or just taking 30 minutes for yourself. Then life happened... Again.
Here's the thing... Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's one of the best things you can do for the people who depend on you.
Parents are wired to put everyone else first. It's what you do. But if you're constantly running on empty, eventually it catches up to you. You have less energy, less patience, more aches and pains, and everyday tasks start feeling harder than they should. When you prioritize your health, everyone benefits. You have more energy to play with your kids. You handle stress better. You're more productive at work. You become the example your children are watching every single day. Kids don't just listen to what we tell them. They copy what we do.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need an hour every day to get healthier. You don't -- 30 minutes is enough. Hell, even 20 minutes consistently is better than waiting for the "perfect" day that never comes. The people who stay healthy aren't the ones with the least going on. They're the ones who decide that their health belongs on the calendar just like every other important appointment.
Think about your week. You wouldn't forget your child's practice. You wouldn't accidentally skip an important meeting. Why? Because it's on the calendar. Your workout deserves the same treatment. Block out the time. Protect it. Treat it like an appointment you can't cancel. If someone asks if you're available during that time, your answer should be, "Sorry, I already have plans.".. Because at the end of the do; you do.
Some weeks you'll get five workouts in. Other weeks you'll only manage two. That's okay. Consistency isn't about being perfect. It's about refusing to quit because life got busy. Every workout counts. Every healthy meal counts. Every walk counts. Small decisions made consistently will always beat huge bursts of motivation.
They need a healthy one. One with the energy to be present. One who can keep up. One who's investing in being around for the moments that matter years from now. So this week, challenge yourself to do one thing. Open your calendar. Find 30 minutes. Schedule time for yourself. Not because you've earned it. Not because everything else is finished. But because taking care of yourself is part of taking care of the people you love.
